Which Transportation Card Should Foreign Travelers Use in Korea?
Which Transportation Card Should Foreign Travelers Use in Korea?
If you are visiting Korea for the first time, one of the first things you may wonder about is how to pay for buses and subways.
You will probably hear a few different names: Tmoney, EZL, WOWPASS, and Climate Card. They are not all the same, and choosing the right one depends mostly on where you are going and how long you are staying.
For a short trip around Korea, a regular Tmoney or EZL card is usually the simplest option. If you are staying in Seoul and plan to use the subway and buses many times over several days, the Climate Card short-term pass is worth checking.
WOWPASS is a little different. It can be useful if you also want a card for shopping, restaurants, and other payments during your trip.
Here is what you should know before buying one.
1. Tmoney: The Simple Choice for Most Travelers
Tmoney is one of the most widely used transportation cards in Korea.
You can use it on buses and subways throughout the country, and the card can also be used at many stores that accept Tmoney payments.
For a traveler staying in Korea for a few days, the basic idea is simple: buy a card, add money to it, and tap it when you get on and off public transportation.
Tmoney cards are sold at convenience stores such as GS25, CU, and 7-Eleven, as well as at some subway station information centers in Seoul. The regular card itself generally costs a few thousand won, before adding money for transportation.
This is the option I would look at first if your trip includes several cities. You do not have to worry about whether your next destination is still inside Seoul's transportation system.
There is also a Tmoney Travel Card made specifically for international visitors. Tmoney currently lists a regular Tmoney Travel Card at ₩4,000, while the Tmoney Travel Card+ is listed at ₩6,000. Availability depends on the product and sales location.
2. EZL Is Another Regular Transportation Card
EZL works much like a regular prepaid transportation card.
You can buy and reload EZL cards at convenience stores, and they can be used for public transportation in Korea. Some affiliated stores also accept EZL for payments.
If you see an EZL card at a convenience store before finding a Tmoney card, there is usually no reason to keep walking around looking for one particular brand just because you are a tourist.
For most visitors, the important thing is having a rechargeable transportation card that works with the buses and subway lines you plan to use.
So, for a normal Korea trip, Tmoney and EZL are best thought of as two regular transportation-card choices rather than two completely different travel systems.
3. WOWPASS: Useful for Transportation and Everyday Payments
WOWPASS is aimed specifically at foreign visitors to Korea.
It is more than a regular transportation card. You can use the WOWPASS balance to pay at many Korean stores, restaurants, and other places that accept local card payments. The card also has a Tmoney transportation function.
There is one detail that catches many first-time users by surprise.
Your WOWPASS payment balance and your Tmoney transportation balance are separate.
In other words, putting money into your WOWPASS payment balance does not automatically put the same money into the Tmoney transportation balance.
If you plan to use WOWPASS on the subway or bus, make sure the Tmoney balance has enough money in it.
This makes WOWPASS particularly interesting for travelers who want one card for everyday purchases and transportation. If you only need a simple subway and bus card, however, a regular Tmoney or EZL card may be easier to understand.
4. Climate Card: Worth Checking If You Stay in Seoul
The Climate Card is different from Tmoney and EZL because it is a pass rather than a normal pay-as-you-go transportation card.
For international visitors, the short-term Climate Card passes are the ones to look at.
| Pass |
Price |
| 1 day |
₩5,000 |
| 2 days |
₩8,000 |
| 3 days |
₩10,000 |
| 5 days |
₩15,000 |
| 7 days |
₩20,000 |
The short-term pass gives unlimited use within its service area during the selected period. Ttareungi bike service and the Hangang Bus are not included in the short-term pass.
The important word here is service area.
The Climate Card is mainly designed around Seoul's public transportation network. It is not a nationwide transportation pass, so it is not the card I would choose for a trip that includes Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju, Jeonju, and several other cities.
If you are spending most of your trip in Seoul and expect to take several buses and subway rides every day, however, the numbers are worth comparing with regular transportation fares.
5. What Changed With the Climate Card in 2026?
This is where older Korea travel guides can cause confusion.
The 30-day prepaid Climate Card was discontinued for new recharges after August 31, 2026. The short-term 1-, 2-, 3-, 5-, and 7-day passes continue to be available for visitors.
Seoul also launched the new Climate Pass in September 2026. This is tied to the national public transportation fare-support system and is aimed at Seoul residents, so it is not something a typical short-term foreign tourist should confuse with the tourist Climate Card passes.
For most visitors coming to Seoul for a few days, the practical question is still much simpler:
Do I want a regular transportation card, or will I use Seoul public transportation often enough to make a short-term Climate Card worthwhile?
6. Can Foreigners Buy a Climate Card With an International Credit Card?
Yes.
Since March 2026, international credit and debit cards such as Visa and Mastercard can be used at participating new transit card vending machines to purchase and recharge Climate Card short-term passes.
This is useful because you no longer have to exchange Korean cash just to buy a short-term Climate Card.
Seoul says an average service fee of about 3.7% applies when using an international card.
If you are using a physical card, remember that the physical Climate Card itself is purchased separately. The short-term pass is then loaded onto the card.
7. What About Incheon Airport?
This is another point worth checking before you arrive.
The Climate Card can be used on the AREX section between Gimpo International Airport Station and Seoul Station. It can also be used to get off at Incheon International Airport Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 in the permitted direction.
However, you cannot board the AREX at Incheon Airport using the Climate Card.
So if you have just landed at Incheon Airport and want to travel into Seoul, do not assume that your Climate Card will cover that first airport train ride.
For the airport-to-Seoul journey, check the current AREX fare or airport bus options separately.
8. Which Card Should You Pick?
| Your trip |
A card to consider |
| Short trip around Korea |
Tmoney or EZL |
| Seoul for a few days with lots of subway and bus rides |
Climate Card short-term pass |
| Seoul plus other cities |
Tmoney or EZL |
| Transportation plus everyday shopping and dining |
WOWPASS |
| Arriving at Incheon Airport |
Use a separate airport-to-Seoul option first |
Here is an easy example.
Suppose you are staying in Seoul for three days and plan to visit Gyeongbokgung, Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, and Jamsil. You will probably use public transportation several times each day. In that case, it makes sense to compare the 3-day Climate Card at ₩10,000 with the normal fares you would pay using Tmoney or EZL.
On the other hand, if your itinerary is Seoul for two days, Busan for three days, and Gyeongju for a day, I would keep things simple and use a regular transportation card.
You do not need a Seoul-only pass for a trip that spends a lot of time outside Seoul.
9. A Few Things First-Time Visitors Often Miss
Keep Some Money on Your Regular Transportation Card
If you are using Tmoney or EZL, remember that these are prepaid cards. Check the balance occasionally instead of waiting until the card is declined at a subway gate.
Do Not Confuse WOWPASS Balance With Tmoney Balance
If you are using WOWPASS, check the transportation balance separately. The money you use for ordinary card payments and the money available for Tmoney transportation are managed separately.
Do Not Assume Climate Card Works Everywhere in Korea
Climate Card is not a nationwide unlimited pass. If your itinerary includes several cities, a regular transportation card is usually much easier to manage.
Check the Latest Information Before Your Trip
Transportation rules can change, especially with Seoul's Climate Card system. A travel guide written a year or two ago may still show the old 30-day Climate Card or outdated prices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tmoney or EZL better for tourists?
Both are regular prepaid transportation cards that can be used on Korean public transportation. For most tourists, there is no need to spend a lot of time comparing them. If one is easier to buy at the convenience store you are standing in, that may be the practical choice.
Can I use Tmoney outside Seoul?
Yes. Tmoney is designed for public transportation use across Korea, which makes it useful for travelers visiting more than one city.
Can I use WOWPASS on the subway?
Yes. WOWPASS includes a Tmoney transportation function. Just remember that the Tmoney transportation balance must be topped up separately from the regular WOWPASS payment balance.
Is Climate Card good for a short Seoul trip?
It can be, especially if you expect to use buses and subways several times a day. Compare the short-term pass price with the amount you expect to spend on individual rides.
Can I use Climate Card from Incheon Airport to Seoul?
No. You cannot board the AREX at Incheon Airport using the Climate Card. Plan to pay separately for your airport-to-Seoul transportation.
Do I need to buy a transportation card before coming to Korea?
No. You can buy regular transportation cards after arriving in Korea. Tmoney and EZL cards are sold at convenience stores, and Climate Card short-term passes can be purchased at designated subway vending machines and other sales locations in Seoul.
The Simple Way to Choose
If you do not want to spend half an hour comparing transportation cards before your trip, keep it simple.
Traveling around Korea? Start with Tmoney or EZL.
Staying mainly in Seoul and using public transportation many times a day? Check the Climate Card short-term pass.
Want a card for shopping and everyday payments as well as transportation? Take a look at WOWPASS.
And if you are arriving at Incheon Airport, deal with the airport-to-Seoul trip separately first. Once you are in Seoul, choosing a card becomes much easier.
Final Tip
You do not need to know every Korean transportation card before your flight.
Think about your itinerary first. If you are moving between several cities, keep the card simple. If you are staying in Seoul and riding the subway and buses all day, check the Climate Card numbers. If you want one card for transportation and everyday spending, look at WOWPASS.
That is usually enough to make the right choice without overthinking it.
